Born in Turin, Juan Zanotto moved with his family to Buenos Aires at the age of thirteen. There, he studied at the North American School of Art. In 1953, he started to work in the comics field at Editorial Codex, where he did mainly western stories. He created 'Ric de la Frontera' with writer Alfredo Grassi in 1955, and a year later, he launched 'El Mundo del Hombre Rojo'. In 1958, he began a ten year stint working for the English Fleetway agency.

He became artistic director at the publishing house Codex in 1965, and did various cover and illustrations. In 1974, Zanotto became artistic director at Ediciones Record, where he also created the series 'Henga' with the scriptwriter Ray Collins. This series also appeared in Italy under the name 'Yor'. Throughout the years, Zonotto launched such series as 'Wakantanka' (scripts by Hector G. Oesterheld), 'Barbara', 'Nueva York Año Cero', Penitenciario' (scripted by Ricardo Barreiro), 'Falka' and 'Cronicas del Tiempo Medio' (written by Emilio Balcarce). The American publisher Eclipse Comics published his comics 'Nueva York Año Cero' and 'Cronicas del Tiempo Medio' in the States in the late 1980s. In the 1990s, he did the graphic novel 'Warman' at Marvel, and 'Starlight' with Robin Wood.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
