Zarate illustrated some children's books and made the comic adaptations 'Lenin for Beginners', 'Freud for Beginners', and 'Faustus'. After creating some short stories for several European magazines like Crisis! (stories with Carlos Sampayo), he made the popular comic 'A Small Killing' with writer Alan Moore.
