Dave Graue was hired by V. T. Hamlin as an assistant writer on the classic caveman strip 'Alley Oop' in 1950. When Hamlin retired from failing eyesight in 1971, Graue took over all art and writing duties on the strip. In 1991, he was assisted by Jack Bender, who drew the strip from Graue's plots until Graue's retirement in August 2001. Only four months later, Graue was killed in a car accident in Flat Rock, North Carolina.
