Matz Mainka studied Art and Illustration in Hamburg. He illustrated an album cover for the Hamburg punk label Weird System in 1986. In 1991 Carlsen Verlag published his first comic, 'Werwölfe', about children that had to fight for their survival shortly after World War II. Mainka was then braught to Japan by the publisher Kodansha, to make the scenario for a Hamburg situated episode of Tsutomu Takahashi's detective series 'Jiraishin'.

After spending several months in Japan, he settled in Madrid. For the Spanish publisher Ponent-Mon he created the book '1928 - Una Historia de Hamburgo' in 2002. This book was also published in german in the following year. This historic comic deals with children who witness Nazis killing a Communist.
