Erik Varekamp studied illustration at the Rietveld Academy for four years between 1984 and 1988, but he did not finish his formal education. In 1984 he also began his ten-year tenure as the assistant of Gerrit de Jager. Together, they made the daily comic 'S.O.S.' for Algemeen Dagblad.

Currently, Varekamp makes comics and illustrations for several clients, such as Daimler Chrysler, Dresdner Bank, VVN and Liander. His work is also published in magazines like AD, Hard Gras and VPRO-Gids. Together with writer Mick Peet he created the comic series 'Agent Orange', about the life of Prince Bernhard, father of Dutch Queen Beatrix.

Using a mixture of fact, rumors and interpretations, they paint a picture of Bernards early years during Nazi-Germany. Ever since the first book publication by Van Praag, the often controversially themed comic has gained a lot of media coverage.
