Lyman Young, like his younger brother Murat 'Chic' Young, showed an early talent for cartooning, which was encouraged by his mother, a painter. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute, served in World War I and worked as a salesman before he started his cartooning career in 1924, taking over C.W. Kahles' 'The Kelly Kids'. Young created his first strip in 1927: 'The Kid Sister', a spin-off of 'The Kelly Kids'.

His most famous strip, 'Tim Tyler's Luck', first appeared on 13 August 1928. Young totally devoted himself to this comic, which he said was a way to recapture some of his childhood dreams. In 1935 Young added the topper strip 'Curley Harper'. In 1937, a film was made of 'Tim Tyler's Luck', starring Frankie Thomas.
Throughout the years, Young hired several artists to ghost for him on the strip, including Alex Raymond, Burne Hogarth, Clark Haas, Tony DiPreta, Nat Edson and Tom Massey. In the 1950s, his son Bob Young took over the daily strip. Young retired, first to Florida, where he lived next to his brother, then on to California. He died in 1984, at age 91.
