Ton Smits probably made his debut in magazine De Humorist around 1941, where he signed his strips "Tommy". He published the comic 'Karel Kwiek' in newspaper De Helmondse Courant (1946 - 1947). 'Daniel Daazer' and 'Dolly en de Juwelenroof' also appeared in the same newspaper.

Ton Smits, who's better known as a cartoonist, designed the logo for the annual cartooning contest of Knokke-Heist, Belgium. The drawing depicts two men embracing each other while laughing. Smits also published his cartoons in magazines Tussen de Rails. The Dutch Cartoonist Society awarded Smits with one of their annual awards as well.
