El Bobo, by Eduardo Abela (1929)

Eduardo Abela was a Cuban painter and cartoonist. He graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in 1921 and subsequently stayed in Spain and France for a couple of years. In Paris, he started painting Cuban themes, depicting Afro-Cuban and Creole culture. Upon his return in Havana, he created the political and social cartoon character 'El Bobo' (1925), who appeared in El Diario de la Marina from 1930 to 1934. Afterwards, he focused on painting again and became Cuba's cultural attache to Mexico and Guatemala.
