Jaybird by Lauri Ahonen

Lauri Ahonen is an independent illustrator and graphic artist from Helsinki, Finland. He works on a wide range of commercial projects, and made a promising debut as a comic artist with the book 'Pikku Närhi' at Egmont Publishing in 2012. He started working on the project for his master's degree thesis from Aalto University, with the intention of making a collection of short fables with a horrific ending. The focus shifted to the sole story about a small jaybird who has to take care of his manipulative and bedridden mother in a large house, while avoiding all outside dangers. He worked out the haunting and largely textless story together with his brother Jaakko Ahonen, and spent 14 months painting the frames.

The Finnish edition was awarded with the Finlandia Prize for Best Comic in 2013, and it was elected as the Top of the Year 2012 by Grafia, the Association of Visual Communication Designers in Finland. Foreign publications followed through the Strip Art Features agency. Dark Horse Comics released the book as 'Jaybird' in the USA, where it was nominated for a 2015 Eisner Award. The story has since then been published in Norway, Italy and the Netherlands.
