My Comics Biography

Askold Akishin is one of the most prominent present-day Russian comic authors. Born in Moscow, he inherited his artistic talents from his father. He attended art school and painted his first full-lenght comic story while in the army in 1985, '60 boevyh' ('60 Combat'). During this period, he also designed posters, charts and wall newspapers, etc.

At age 23, he joined the comics studio KOM, where he published his work in the entertainment weekly Vecherbuaua Nisjva and made illustrations for Conan Doyle, Lovecraft and Stevenson books. Akishin also gained recognition outside Russia. His work appeared in foreign publications like Comic Art (Italy), Stripburger (Slovenia), Urban Stories (Poland), Aargh! (Czechia), Galago (Sweden) and a British zombie anthology.

Akashin works mainly on horror and war comics, including adaptations of stories by Poe, Lovecraft, Bradbury and other horror masters. Notable works by Akashin include his comic book version of the Bulgakov novel 'The Master and Margarita' with Zaslavsky (1992-1993) and 'A Chronicle of Military Actions', a comic based on the novel 'On The Western Front' by E.-M. Remarka. He uses mainly black-and-white in his work; one of his few color comics is 'The Cave' from 1991.

After difficulties finding work in the early post-Soviet era, Akashin has focused on illustration work, doing an occasional comic story for the Russian Comics Corporation RKK. His story about suburban conflicts, 'Bad Company', was published in Big City in 2003. He is currently a contributor to the children's magazine Geolënok and the newspaper Stupeni Orakula. He chronicled his experiences from his childhood, summer camps, military service, study and his time with KOM in his 140-page graphic novel 'Moja komiks-biografija' ('My Comics Biography').
