Batman - A Death in the Family, by Jim Aparo
Batman - 'A Death in the Family'.

Jim Aparo started his career in the field of advertising and newspaper comics, which he did for a short time before trying to enter the mainstream comic book field. He eventually landed a job with Charlton Comics in the late 1960s. He worked on several genres there, including superhero stories - most notably, 'The Phantom' - before being recruited by his editor Dick Giordano for a move to DC Comics in the late 1960s.

At DC Comics, he established a solid fan base on features such as 'Aquaman' and 'Phantom Stranger', before given the reins of DC's premiere team-up book, 'The Brave and the Bold' (starring Batman), where he commited himself for years, until the early 1980s.

Afterwards, Aparo co-created a new 'Batman' team-up book called 'Batman and the Outsiders', which ran for years, before switching over to the dominant Batman and Detective Comics in the mid-1980s. In the 1970s, he has also worked on 'The Spectre' with Michael Fleischer in Adventure Comics. For most of his career, Jim Aparo not only pencilled his work, but inked and lettered it as well. This changed in the late 1980s when DC teamed him up with various inkers, all willing to take a shot at this legend's renditions.

Jim Aparo was an influence on Maarten Janssens.
