G. Aravindan was a pioneering Indian filmmaker, as well as a musician, painter and cartoonist. He was born in 1935 as Govindan Aravindan in Kerala as the son of comedy writer M.N. Govindan Nair. Before he turned to films, he was successful as a cartoonist with 'Cheriya Manushyarum, Valiya Lokavum', a satirical weekly feature he made for the Mathrubhumi journal from 1961 to 1973. It is considered a precursor to the graphic novel, because of its novel-like structure and the evolution of the innocent protagonist into a scheming businessman, although the comic had no predetermined plot. Other cartoon series by Aravindan were 'Ramuvinte Sahasika Yathrakal' and 'Guruji'.

Aravindan then became a leading figure in theater and music, establishing clubs and writing plays with Kavalam Narayana Panicker. He started writing and directing films in the 1970s, the first being 'Uttarayanam' (1974). Among his other films are 'Kanchana Sita', 'Esthappan', 'Pokkuveyil', 'Chidambaram', 'Oridathu', 'Marattam' and 'Vasthuhara'. His films often dealt with spiritual and mythological subjects, and paved the way for independent filmmaking in India.

He passed away in 1991.
