Redouane Assari began his career in 1970 with the magazine M'Quidech, for which he created seven episodes of the series 'Plein Gaz'. He then made his first realistic comic for Tarik in 1974, using the pseudonym Malek Benines. In 1984, he contributed a science fiction comic to the magazine Album. Also in the 1980s, he published the album 'La Rencontre', and contributed to comic magazines like Fantasia and Tim.
In 1993, he began drawing for the cultural magazine Le Jeudi d'Algérie, critisizing the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS). When several artists were killed by Muslim activists, Assari settled in Paris, France, the following year. There, he focused on advertising art, and illustrated the 'Tilou' children's books, created by Fabien and Christine Theillier.
