Benze was one of the illustrators who worked for the children's magazine Der Schmetterling, published by Verlag Steinsberg in Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s. Benze illustrated a vertical comic strip called 'Ladenlehrling Leo Lustig', that appeared on the magazine's back cover, as well as an occasional story for the front page.
