Comic strip by Marten Bierman

Marten Bierman was a Dutch centre-left politician, engineer and graphic artist. Born in Amsterdam, he studied architecture and urban design, and drew the title comic of the magazine Student in 1966. He subsequently drew 'Loek Spandoek', a comic strip for Radikaal, the magazine of the socialist party PSP. He has also worked for De Groene Amsterdammer and De Volkskrant. He worked as an independent engineer in the 1970s and was co-founder of the IJsselmeervereniging (1972), an association for the preservation of the wildlife and landscape around the IJsselmeer. Bierman was chairman from 2000 to 2010.

Bierman was party leader for the ecologist party Federatieve Groenen during the 1986 elections for the House of Representatives, and a candidate for Leefbaar Nederland during the 2002 elections. He was a member of the Dutch Eerste Kamer (House of Lords) for De Groenen and several regional parties between 1995 and 2003. He was alderman in Zandvoort between 2006 and 2010. Since 2010 he was affiliated to Red Amsterdam ("Save Amsterdam"), a local party opposed to the construction of the controversial North-South line of the Amsterdam subway system, among other things.
