Children of Doom, by Pat Boyette

Pat Boyette was a notable artist of horror and war stories for mainly Charlton. He was already in his 40s when he began working in comic books, however. Boyette started out working at the radio as a local soap opera actor. He eventually became a broadcast newsman, and during World War II, he worked as a cryptographer. After World War II, he turned to television, becoming a TV news anchorman in San Antonio. He also produced a daytime talk show, a puppet show and TV commercials. In the mid-1950s, he briefly drew the syndicated newspaper strip 'Captain Flame'.

He left the television scene in the 1960s. After working as a film maker for a while, he finally turned to comics. He started out working at Charlton, where his first work was 'Shadows from Beyond' in 1966. He worked on many Charlton titles in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, such as 'The Phantom', 'Flash Gordon', 'Ghost Manor', 'Ghostly Tales', 'Haunted', 'Jungle Jim', 'Outer Space', 'Space Adventure' and 'Thunderbolt', working with writers like Joe Gill and Steve Skeates. He began 'Peacemaker' as a backup in 'Fightin' Five', but the feature soon got its own title.

When Charlton's Dick Giordano left for DC, Boyette also began doing jobs for this company, such as 'Blackhawk', 'The Unexpected' and 'Witchin Hour'. Boyette also appeared in magazines like Adventure Illustrated ('Stinger Ray'), Monster Attack, Nightmare and Marvel's Epic Illustrated. In the 1970s, he contrited to Warren's horror titles Eerie, Creepy and Vampirella. He also drew 'Korak' for the European market. In the 1980s, he joined ACE comics with contributions to 'Spencer Spook', 'Robin Red and the Lutins' and 'The Cosmic Book'. Boyette did horror stories for Gladstone's 'Grave Tales' and 'Dread of Night' in the 1990s, and comic adaptations of 'Treasure Island' and 'Robinson Crusoe' for Valiant. He also drew 'Mary Stuart' at Marvel. He died in 2000 on his Texas ranch.
