Jules Calis is a Dutch comic artist and illustrator, specialized in politically conscious journalistic comics in a crime noir style. He studied History and has made a comic about the experiences of Dutch soldiers from Dongen in Afghanistan as his graduation project from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. 'Van Dongen, naar Afghanistan en terug' is based on interviews with five soldiers and was published on the site of the Dutch Veteran Day 2012 and in daily newspaper Metro. Calis has also made artwork for bands and musicians. De Volkskrant published his comics report on a music festival in Kabul on Saturday 8 June 2013.
With Adri van Kooten, Boy Akkerman, Age Morris, Erwin Suvaal, Ulrik Art and West Givner, he forms "De Rotterdamse 7" ("The Rotterdam 7"), a group of Rotterdam-based artists who publish the quarterly comic magazine Hollandsch Metaal since October 2016.
