The Horror of Candle Lodge (Out of the Shadows #9, 1953)
Nicholas Viscardi, best known as Nick Cardy, attended the New York Art School and studied painting and sculpting. After a brief period working as a sculptor, he began his career in comics in 1939, working with the Eisner-Iger Shop. Cardy drew for comic books like Fight Comics, Jungle Comics, Kaanga Comics and Fiction House. Eisner assigned Viscardi to draw the 'Lady Luck' strip in the Spirit comic book. He worked with Chuck Mazoujian under the joint pen name Ford Davis on several episodes of the strip between 1939 and 1941. Nick Viscardi was the first artist who drew 'Senorita Rio', in Fight Comics. Cardy was drafted during the War, and served in the 66th Infantry Division as a tank driver.
Daniel Boone
Back in Civil life, he worked in advertising for a while, and in the 1950s, he drew the 'Tarzan' comic strip for a while. He then worked for DC Comics drawing two short lived series, 'The Legends of Daniel Boone' and the jungle adventure 'Congo Bill' as well as stories for varied titles including 'House of Mystery' and' Gang Busters'. For Standard Comics, he drew many horror and romance comics.
Nick Cardy helped define the comics Silver Age with artwork on 'Aquaman', 'Teen Titans', and 'Bat Lash'. After the Teen Titans, Cardy worked on Marvel Comics Crazy Magazine and was the primary cover artist for DC from the early to mid-1970s. Cardy drew many covers including 'Superman', 'Action Comics', 'The Brave and the Bold', 'Batman', 'Flash', 'Ghosts', 'Witching Hour', 'Secret Origins', 'Jimmy Olsen' and 'World's Finest'. After leaving the comics field, Cardy moved on to illustrating advertising art and movie posters until his retirement, by now working under the name Nick Cardi.
Cardy passed away on 3 November 2013 at the age of 93.
