Chester Commodore was an important African American cartoonist, who worked for the Chicago Defender, Pittsburgh Courier and other newspapers for 50 years. He drew editorial cartoons as well as gag and social commentary strips and panels such as 'So What!', 'Bungleton Green' (which he took over from Jay Jackson), 'The Sparks' and 'Ravings of Prof. Doodle'. Commodore and his wife retired to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1981, but he continued to draw weekly until his death.
