John Henry Crosman studied at Massachusetts Normal School with Richard Andrew and Ernest Major. He was a painter and magazine illustrator, among others for McCall's and the Saturday Evening Post during the late 1920s, the 1930s and 1940s. He also drew comic adaptations of novels for King Features Book-of-the-Month Club series. Among his credits were Willard Motley's 'Knock on any Door', Taylor Caldwell's 'This Side of Innocence' and Benedict and Nancy Freedman's 'Mrs. Mike'. During World War II he often did pastel portraits of service men and women and presented them to their families.
