Zack Hill

John Deering grew up as the son of a fire chief in Cammack Village, near Little Rock, Arkansas. He studied painting with portrait artist Truman Alston and majored in Fine Art at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He got a job at the editorial art department of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 1981. He was promoted to chief editorial cartoonist in 1988.

Since then, Deering has won numerous awards for his cartoons, that have also appeared in Time magazine, Newsweek and USA Today, and were featured on several TV shows. His editorial cartoons, as well as his comic panel 'Strange Brew' (since 1997), are distributed by Creators Syndicate. The syndicate also runs his comic strip 'Zack Hill', which he makes with writer John Newcombe since 2003. John Deering is also active as a sculptor.
