Joe Doyle was an early 20th century American cartoonist. He was born in Ireland in 1888, but moved with his mother to the United States in the same year. Settled in Philadelphia, he was an artist with the Philadelphia Inquirer. His strips appeared in the Boys' and Girls' Magazine Section from 1913. Among the features he drew were 'Scary William', 'Fineheimer Twins', 'Little Possum Gang' and 'That Irresistible Rag'. He succeeded Myer Marcus on 'Excuse Me' in the Jersey Journal in 1915, and also created his own feature 'Lonesome Lew' for that paper. He was subsequently affiliated with the Keystone Feature Syndicate.
