The American illustrator Edward Courtney Dunkel was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and educated at the Maryland Institute of Arts. In the 1920s, he made newspaper features like 'Fumble Family' and 'Radio Bugs'. Dunkel's features like 'Ozone Oscar', 'Mystic Martin', 'Bachelor Bowers', 'Colonel Knutt', 'Timmy O'Toole' and 'Vagabond Man' were published in early Dell comic books like The Funnies and The Comics in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Dunkel was a cartoonist, illustrator and comic artist for Judge magazine in the 1930s. In 1944-45 and 1947 he did a newspaper feature called 'Hannah' for the McClure Syndicate. In the 1960s he was the political columnist for The York Dispatch in Pennsylvania, and during this period he also had his syndicated feature 'Draw Your Own Conclusion', and the weekly 'Crazy Quilt' panel for Independent Features (1965). He passed away in York, Pennsylvania, in 1982.
