De Kat in Katendrecht

Bart van Erkel was an illustrator, designer and comic artist from Rotterdam. He was a designer with the Bataafsche Teekenmaatschappij and he worked on comics in his spare time. Van Erkel published his first stories in Ton van Loon's Vision magazine from 1979 and contributed to the alternative comic magazine Coyote in the mid-1980s (Drukwerk). He worked with Martin Lodewijk on 'De Kat in Katendrecht', a revival of Henk Albers' 1940s character, that was published by Blue Circle in 1985. The book was also published in German, French and English. Also with Lodewijk, he made 'Matt Marteau - Zonder Twijfel' for the Titanic collection by Arboris in 1987.

Among his other comics work are 'Dakhaas en Bollewang' (1981) and the advertising comic 'De schoonheid van de automaat', that was written by Willem Ritstier. In cooperation with scriptwriters Marjanne van Nieuwpoort and Mark de Jonge, Van Erkel has illustrated four booklets starring 'Piggelmee' for the Bataafsche Teekenmaatschappij. Bart van Erkel is also known for his cover illustration for Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. He additionally made designs and covers for the comics published by Yendor. He passed away in July 2012.
