O Amigo da onça by Carlos Estevão

Carlos Estevão de Souza was a Brazilian cartoonist, born in Recife, Pernambuco, into a family of Portuguese origins. A self-taught artist, he made his first architectural drawings while working fo the Department of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce. He served in the army during World War II and settled in Rio de Janeiro in 1946.

He was a contributor to publications of the newspaper firm Diários Associados, such as Diretrizes and Diário da Noite. Among his early creations was the comic strip 'Ignorabus, o contador de histórias', with writer Vão Gôgo (Millôr Fernandes). He subsequently began his assiciation with the magazine O Cruzeiro, that lasted until the author's death in 1972.

He made illustrations, caricatures and cartoons for the magazine, and also continued 'O Amigo da Onça' for a short period following the death of the feature's creator, Péricles Maranhão. In 1962 he also edited nine issues of the magazine Dr. Macarra. Carlos Estavão passed away in Belo Horizonte in 1972.
