José Lopez Fernandez (Fernan) drew numerous historical comics for Tintin magazine in the late 1950s, most of them written by the scenarists Duval or Duchâteau. In the mid-1960s, Fernan turned to Spirou, where he continued doing historical stories in the 'Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul' series, either signing with Fernan or with Psepol.
Together with Juan-Manuel Cicuendez, he produced two continuing stories for the magazine: 'Les Trafiquants d'Ébène' and 'Les Mayas'. In the 1970s, he drew the final episodes of 'Dragut' in Nevada with scripts by Claude Legrand.
