Yvan Fernandez was born in the Spanish city of Bilbao in the Basque country, and has lived in Belgium since 1963. He studied Applied Science in Brussels and graduated as a civil engineer. Between 1979 and 1994, he served as an assistant to artists like Christian Denayer, Dany and Éric Loutte on comic series like 'Alain Chevalier', 'Les Casseurs', 'Bernard Prince' and 'Biggles'. His first solo comics were short stories in cooperation with Jean-Yves Brouard in the early 1990s. By 1996, he was hired by Dargaud as the new artist of the classic aviation comic 'Tanguy et Laverdure'. Together with writer Jean-Claude Laidin, he published his first book in the series in 2002. It wasn't until 2012 that Fernandez's second book appeared.
