The Tokyo Drifter by Takashi Fukutani

Takashi Fukutani was born in the prefecture of Okayama in 1952. After a troubled childhood, he launched to manga serial 'The Tokyo Drifter' ('Dokushin Apato Dokudami-so') in Weekly Manga Times in 1979. It tells the, somewhat autobiographical, story of a marginal unemployed and obsessed man, who has experienced poverty and alcoholism. The series ran until 1994, and gave a humorous and uncompromising look of contemporary Japanese society. Takashi Fukutani, who became somewhat of a cult manga artist, died of pulmonary edema in 2000, at the age of 48.
