José Garcês began his comics career in 1946 in O Mosquito, and received his diploma for Graphic Arts that same year. Garcês worked for O Mosquito for over a decade, providing various comics. For many years, he was an illustrator and comic artist for O Século and the women's magazine Modas e Bordados. He also illustrated several schoolbooks during his career. Garcês had his biggest success in the 1980s, with his four volume series 'Historia de Portugal em BD', which he made in collaboration with historian A. do Carmo.
