Voleman by Jiri Grus

Jirí Grus is probably the most important artist of the new wave of Czech comic creators that came after the year 2000. Born in Trutnov, he published his first short picture stories in the magazine Bublinky when he was thirteen. Then he graduated from the Václav Hollar School of Fine Arts in Prague, and from the Academy of Fine Arts (classical painting techniques). During his studies he had started cooperate with comics journals Crew and AARGH!.

Later he published short comics in the periodicals as Pot, Zkrat, Zivel or Labyrint Revue. In the period 2000-2002 he won three awards at the International Festival of Comics in Lodz, Poland and he has received many other prizes at Czech comics cons and festivals till these days.

In the beginning Grus was fascinated by SF aesthetics and his stories were full of bionic montsters and rusty robots. Together with scriptwriter Stepán Kopriva he produced the bloody space opera 'Nitro', a comic album that was translated in several other languages including Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Greek. Later he started focusing on more informal topics and he created a character called 'Voleman' - a thirty years old guy from Prague who deals with common problems (especialy with his girlfriend) but who also has to take part in rather absurd missions. 'Voleman' debuted in AARGH!, and has since got his own series of black & white comics books as well as a weekly strip called 'Volemanovy príhody' in the newspaper Deník.
