Born and raised in Oudekerk aan de Amstel, Mark Hendriks studied art at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, The Netherlands. He graduated in 1997 and settled in Amsterdam to become part of comics studio De Zwarte Handel. His work has been published in small-press magazines like Incognito and Zone 5300 since 1991. In 1994, he created his first 'Tomoyo' stories, about a Japanese porn actress, and several book collections have appeared over the years.

The albums 'Hong Kong Love Story' and 'Ikayaki' have been awarded as Best Albums of the year 2000 by Het Stripschap. Hendriks' work found its way to an international audience through publications in the French anthology Comix 2000 and the magazine Stripburger. In 2006, Oog en Blik published his graphic novel 'De Nieuwe Hemel', about women during the Chinese/Japanese war of the 1930s. Mark Hendriks lives together with his wife, comic artist Maaike Hartjes.
