Cees Heuvel spent his childhood in Indonesia and Central Africa. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in 's Hertogenbosch. Afterwards he moved to Amsterdam, where he worked for years in a downtown studio gallery. He has made comics, illustrations and cartoons for various media. In the 1980s, he contributed to Coyote, the comic magazine published by Drukwerk.

With the support of the Dutch Foundation for Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, Heuvel finished his graphic novel 'Q' in 2001. The book, a wordless play between ancient ritual and modern conventions, was published in that same year by Oog & Blik. Heuvel is also known for his pastel paintings.
