Nicole Hollander is an American author of satirical cartoons and comic strips, such as 'Sylvia'. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Nicole Hollander left school expecting to become a painter. Instead, she worked as a graphic designer in California, styling matchboxes. After moving back to her hometown Chicago, Hollander worked as an art teacher and art director. She also tried her hand at illustrating children's books, and worked as a graphic artist for the feminist magazine The Spokeswomen. She also drew political cartoons for the magazine, and by 1976 she developed the comic strip 'The Feminist Funnies', that starred her character Sylvia.

After that, 'Sylvia' appeared in books and on calendars, and by 1981 the strip was syndicated by Field Enterprises. Hollander's strip dealt with political, social and cultural topics, and was collected by the author in 19 books. By 1997, 'Sylvia' was running in over 80 daily and weekly papers. Besides 'Sylvia', Nicole Hollander also started a line of greeting cards and calendars and wrote and illustrated a number of books about cats. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hollander also produced strips for Mother Jones magazine.

Hollander has furthermore led several workshops on cartooning, and is a faculty member at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She continued to make 'Sylvia' through Tribune Media Services until her retirement in 2012, and has also published her strip on her website for many years.
