Ben Horsthuis was a teacher, who also worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines, children's books and schoolbooks. He drew pictures for Sunday schools for publisher Meinema in Delft and was then employed by the publishing house De Banier. He has made countless illustrations for book covers, colouring pictures and children's stories, that were published in De Gezinsgids, among other magazines. In 1946 and 1947 he made political drawings for Algemeen Dagblad. His comics include 'Bella Paardebloem' (in Prinsestadt, 1946), 'Siep gaat naar de Olympische Spelen' (in Katholieke Missiën, 1952 and Taptoe, 1956) and several stories for Okki (until 1960).

De mattenmaker van Steenwijk by Ben Horsthuis

He was present in family magazine Terdege with the comic 'Jef Farèl' and illustrations for the nature section in the early 1980s. He was a regular illustrator for Reformatorisch Dagblad; his work for the paper included the historical comic strip 'De Mattenmaker van Steenwijk', from a script by the publisher Tijmen Mateboer. The story was collected in book format by Voorhoeve in 1981, and by De Banier in 2012. In addition, he illustrated 10 comic books with 'Dindon', an educational series for the primary school's first grade.
