'Channelate'.
Ryan Hudson is an American writer, animator and web cartoonist, known for his dark humor webcomic and animated short series 'Channelate' (2008- ). He has also been an animator, storyboard artist and author for the team behind the similarly sarcastic 'Cyanide & Happiness' webcomic (2013-2016), created by Rob DenBleyker, Kris Wilson, DaveElfatrick and Matt Melvin.
Early life and career
Born in 1984 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Ryan K. Hudson was already creating and drawing stories as a child. He pursued his artistic ambitions and studied Animation at Salt Lake Community College (2002-2004) and Graphic Design at Utah Valley University (2004-2006). After graduating, he began his career as a freelance designer and illustrator. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked on 3D models and animations for several studios (Glyphx, Sandman Studios, Sensory Sweep Studio, Lumenas Studios) and also a medical education agency, Infuse Medical.
Channelate
In early 2008, Hudson began posting his webcomics to all the major social media sites, eventually gaining a massive fanbase. Between 2008 and 2022, he named his strip 'Channelate', but eventually rebranded it to just his own name. Drawing inspiration from TV shows like Trey Parker & Matt Stone's 'South Park' and the webcomics 'Cyanide and Happiness' (by the Explosm team) and 'The Perry Bible Fellowship' (by Nicholas Gurewitch), Hudson's strips are a mix of sarcastic humor, unexpected twists and overall absurdity. Each episode takes a seemingly mundane situation and turns it into something bizarre and funny. Initially stick figures, but later more elaborate, Hudson's characters have wide empty eyes and pale-white skins, giving them an eerie and surreal look.
In addition to comics, Hudson also creates animated shorts with similar strange and dark comedy. Between 2013 and 2016, he also worked for the team behind Explosm.net, doing animatics, animated shorts and voices for the 'Cyanide and Happiness' shorts.
