Stéphane Knecht, better known as Kélilan, studied graphic arts in Marseille, before he moved to Brussels to study at the comics section of the Saint-Luc. Back in France in 1983, he started a comics atelier and did several advertising jobs. He did his first long comic for Okapi in 1998 with a script by Eric Corbeyran. He then did several short stories for Spirou scripted by Zidrou, Janssens, Corbeyran or Tolbiac. In 2000, he cooperated on Philippe Bonifay's project to adapt G.J. Arnaud's science-fiction book 'La Compagnie des Glaces' to comics. He also did the storyboards for the 'Pirates' series by Bonifay and Terpant. He began his trilogy 'La Traversée Onirique d'Azur Daffodil' at Éditions Paquet in 2001.
