Kazu Kibuishi was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1978. He studied film studies at the University of California in the U.S., where he drew the comic 'Clive and Cabbage' for student newspaper The Daily Nexus. He went on to become an animator for company Shaded Box in Los Angeles, but later decided to leave animation and focus on making comics. In 2002, he started his monthly comic 'Copper' on his website. It was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2006.
He is the creator and editor of the 'Flight' comic anthology, of which 8 issues appeared between 2004 and 2011. He created the 4-issue steampunk graphic novel 'Daisy Kutter: The Last Train' for Viper Comics in 2006. His ongoing graphic novel series 'Amulet' is published by Scholastic since 2008. It is also printed by publishers Akileos in France and Silvester in The Netherlands.
