Roland Kohlsaat started illustrating and cartooning after the second World War. His first comic strip was an adaptation of Erich Kästners' famous novel 'Emil und die Detektive'. In 1953, Kohlsaat created 'Jimmy das Gummipferd' ('Jimmy the Rubber Horse'), which became his most famous comic strip. It ran for nearly twenty-four years in the magazine Stern. In 1960, this strip was re-titled to 'Julios Abenteuerliche Reisen' ('Julio's Adventurous Voyages'). Kohlsaat became incapacitated in 1976, and the strip was discontinued. Roland Kohlsaat died on 1 February 1978.
