Comic art by Jal

José Alberto Lovetro is a Brazilian cartoonist, journalist and comic expert, who signs his cartoon work with Jal. He has published his work in many of Brazil's important magazines and papers, starting with the Quadrinhos supplement of Folha de S. Paulo in 1973. He has since contributed to The Brazilians (a paper from New York), TV Tupi, Arigatô, the publisher Ebal and its magazines Klik and Gripho, Pasquim, TV Cultura, TV Gazeta, Semanário and many more.

As a comic artist, he is best-known for reviving the classic strip 'O Amigo da Onça' ('My Phoney Friend') for Sémanario in the early 1990s. The strip was created by Péricles Maranhão for O Cruzeiro in the 1940s and 1950s, and was remarkable for its social satire. Lovetro served mainly as the strip's writer, but also alternated on the artwork with Octávio Cariello and Sérgio Morettini.

Lovetro is also one of the driving forces behind the Brazilian comic scene. He has been a professor in comic art with the University of São Paulo, is the president of the Brazilian Association of Cartoonists, and has organized several international comic festivals.
