Luis Pérez Ortiz, who signs with his initials LPO, began his career in the humorous periodical El Cocodrilo in 1975. He proved to be a skilled artist in both his narrative techniques and his innovative use of speech balloons and silhouettes. He published in Troya and Madriz magazines in the 1970s and 1980s. Due to an economic crisis, he turned to press illustration in the 1990s. He is the son of the artist Frutos.
