Stan MacGovern was an artist from New York whose absurd comic strip 'Silly Milly' appeared in the daily pages of the New York Post for several decades. MacGovern's mother was a light opera star and his father the publicist of songwriter George M. Cohan. After his graduation in 1921, he went to work as a copy boy in the art department of the New York Sun Herald. He eventually left the paper and played with a jazz band for a while, before joining the New York Post. 'Silly Milly' began as 'Extra Extra' in 1938 and satirized news events and social trends. For 25 years, MacGovern drew his daily strip, several editorial cartoons and he served as head of the Post's art department.
