Bernardo Marques was a famous and respected artist whose subtle and critical observations of society were a constant feature in his comics career. Most of his comics appeared in the magazines Diário de Notícias and Kino. His comic production was huge, containing not only strips but also full-page pictures. From the mid-1920s to the early 1930s, Marques created an oeuvre which showed a particular sense of humor. Many of his comics published in Diário de Notícias were characterized by a philosophical anxiety about solitude and the meaning of life. For his work in Kino, he used another, more cinemagraphic approach. In his comics and illustrations for this magazine, he explored the limits of modernist beauty in his artwork.
Apart from his comics and illustration work, Bernardo Marques was a celebrated painter.
