Martial Durand, who published under his first name, attended the School of Applied Arts in Paris and started making humorous illustrations for magazines like Le Hérisson, Ici Paris and Marius in 1946. His first comics were published in Jeunes Gars ('Dynamit', 'Riton'), O.K. ('Corail et Tupopzeu', 'Youmbo'), Zorro ('Les Quatre Mousquetaires', 'Arthur et Goupillon'), Le Petit Canard and several magazines of the Fleurus publishing group, such as Coeurs Vaillants and Fripounet et Marisette.

Starting in 1952, Martial worked for the syndicate World Press, making 'Sylvie' for Bonnes Soirées (scripts by René Goscinny), 'Fifi, Fifille' and 'Alain et Christine' for La Libre Belgique, and 'Rosine, Petite Fille Modele' for Pistolin (the latter all with scripts by Jean-Michel Charlier). 'Sylvie' became Martial's longest running series, appearing from 1952 until 1994. Also in the 1950s, he produced several 'Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul' in Spirou using the pseudonym Benoît Laroche. Other pen names by Martial are Augusto or Hubert Paul.

Between 1959 and 1961, he drew 'Riri' for Nano et Nanette, as well as a comic adaptation of the radio program 'Nibdeblair, Cheveu et Cie'. In 1960, he began a collaboration with the magazine Pilote, and created series like 'Monsieur Sais-Tout', 'Jérôme Bluff' and 'Tony Laflamme'. From 1962, he was present in Record, where he published series like 'Captain Tafia'.

In 1967, he created 'La Famille Boffafion' for Jeunes Agriculteurs and Pilote. He also worked for the magazines Lucky Luke ('Dom Félix et Pitule'), Pif Gadget,('Pastille et les Musclés'), Tintin ('Tutti Frutti') and Footy ('Mister Foot').
