Brooke McEldowney was born in West Virginia and grew up in Florida. He studied music at the Juilliard School in New York, all the time doodling comics in the margins of his sheet music. He became a professional violist, music critic and comic artist. He was a cartoonist and editor for the classical music magazine Opus, and has also published cartoons in Yankee and Pulse. His comic strip '9 Chickweed Lane' is syndicated by United Media since 1993.

The strip, that spotlights music and dance with graphical experiments, was awarded twice with the Genesis Award Commendations for animal rights issues, and it won the National Cartoonists Society award for Best Newspaper Strip in 2005. The strip appears in 60 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, Calgary Sun and Columbus Dispatch. McEldowney also created the the spin-off webcomic 'Pibgorn'. He furthermore designs sets, writes, and composes for the theater.
