The Life of Momongo, by Junko Mizuno

Junko Mizuno made her comic debut in the rock magazine H., drawing in a haunting manga style that combined cute girls with wide eyes and beaming smiles with skulls and corpses. 'The Life of Momongo', one of her older stories, has recently been translated and published in 'Secret Comics Japan', a collection of modern Japanese underground comics. Like the characters she draws, Mizuno herself is petite and cute. A fan of Russ Myer and the Spice Girls, she maintains a room cluttered with toys and figures. In recent years, she has received great acclaim in manga circles, not only for her singular way of juxtaposing the cute and the grotesque, but for her sharp sensibility and beautiful color work.
