Erik Hjorth Nielsen followed several art studies before he moved to Brazil for two years. Here, he did some illustration work for children's magazines. Back in Denmark, he continued illustrating. He made illustrations for more than 100 children's books. In 1988, he created a comic adaptation of an old Norwegian folktale, 'Hvid & sort som mælk & blod' ('White & Black as Milk & Blood'). His version was a more modern version of the story, containing more erotic and violent elements.
