Luis del Olmo is a cartoonist and a journalist from Bilbao mainly known as the creator of 'Don Celes'. This pantomime daily comic strip first appeared in La Gaceta del Norte on 19 October 1945. Olmo was asked to think up a new series similar to those popular in foreign newspapers. Don Celes played a great variety of roles in the series. Depending on the day he could be a policeman or a thief, an indignant man or a rogue, but he was always dogged by misfortune.

In April 1969, 'Don Celes' changed newspapers and from then on it was published in El Correo Español-El Pueblo Vasco. Other Spanish newspapers also acquired the strip. In addition, the Danish agency Copenhague Press Illustrations Bureau delivered it to other countries, especially Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany. The ongoing series has run for more than sixty years.
