After Niels Roland graduated from high school, he studied film. In 1986, he published his first comic, called 'The Studio' ('Atelieret'), a collection of satirical stories. His next album was 'New Roses Rock', created together with writer Kurt Mortensen. In 1987, Roland's strip 'Success' started in the newspaper Ekstrabladet. A year later, his album 'Lizard City' ('Firbenenes By') appeared. Together with Per Vadmand, he created 'Gunnar' in 1989, and since then seven albums have appeared of this series.
At the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Nazi occupation of Denmark in 1990, Roland and Morten Hesseldahl made 'Denmark Occupied' ('Danmark Besat'), which appeared in five albums, one for each year of the occupation. In 1995, this series was followed by 'Swan Song' ('Svanesang'), and in 1996, by the first album in a new series about the Cold War. In the meantime, Niels Roland single-handedly created 'Gods Before Darkness' ('Guder før Mørket'), a racing car series set in 1930s Germany. In 1996, he started his newspaper comic 'Dana Blues' in Jyllandsposten. For his work, Niels Roland has been nominated for and awarded many comic prizes in the Danish Comics Convention.
