At a very young age, Machiko Satonaka knew she wanted to become a manga artist. By the age of sixteen she made her debut with 'Pia no Shozo', for which she received the Kodansha award for new artists. Satonaka dropped out of school a year later and moved to Tokyo. There she launched her professional career and became one of the most popular and best comic creators for young girls and women. Among her early titles were 'Lady Ann', 'Manayome Sensei' and 'Hime Ga Yuka'. Since the 1980s, Machiko Satonaka has been doing various series for Kodansha and Shogakan. Some of her series have lasted for a year, one for more than a decade. Besides setting high standards for comics for young girls, Satonaka has been a spearhead behind movements to protect and advance manga generally.
