Elizabeth Shaw was born in Belfast and raised in England. She attended the Chelsea School of Art in London and began her career as a graphic artist in London. She married the German sculptor René Graetz in 1944, and settled in Berlin in 1946. She has drawn for German satirical and weekly magazines, including Neues Deutschland, and illustrated the work of Berta Waterstradt and Bertolt Brecht.

Starting in 1962, she wrote and illustrated 23 children's books, among which 'Zilli, Billi und Willi', 'Der kleine Angsthase' and 'Die Schildkröte hat Geburtstag'. In 1973, Shaw made the monthly comic 'Sonntagmorgen' in Magazin.
